This passive solar eco-home was designed by Nelson architect Peter Olorenshaw and build by The Little Pig Building Company on a property in rural Richmond at the top of New Zealand’s South Island.
Specifically designed for a valley environment that experiences relatively short sunshine hours in the winter, this home maximises the available winter sunlight while minimising overheating in the summer.
This house features 150mm douglas fir timber framed walls which allow for high rated insulation but the structure also includes strategically placed adobe walls to provide thermal mass along with the other benefits of this natural material.
Exterior cladding is macrocarpa coated with a premium wood oil. Exterior joinery is double glazed and constructed from oak.
The polished concrete floor is used to store heat from the sun and also includes a hydronic heating system.
